How to install SAS 9.2 on your Windows desktop
1. Be sure you are logged in with an administrator account (csg-admin or equivalent). Insert disk 1 and run Setup.exe.
2. Select "English" from the drop-down menu and click "OK".
3. Select "Install SAS Software" and then click "Next".
4. Click on "Install SAS Foundation and Related Software" then click "Next".
5. Click "Select all" then click Next.
6. When prompted to use 32 or 64-bit mode for the Enterprise Guide, select 64-bit and click "Next".
7. When prompted to use 32 or 64-bit mode for the add-ins for Microsoft Office, select 64-bit and click "Next".
8. Click "Select all" then click "Next".
9. Find an appropriate SETINIT file. Depending on the vintage of the installation media that you are using, an appropriate SETINIT might be included right on the installation disk, in which case it will be automatically loaded. If your installation disk contains expired SETINIT files, please contact Sean (scaron@umich.edu) for updates. You can use the "Browse" button to browse for an updated SETINIT downloaded to a given path on your workstation.
Note that there is both a 64-bit SETINIT and a 32-bit SETINIT. Use the SETINIT that corresponds to the SAS that you are installing (32-bit SAS won't take a 64-bit SETINIT and vice versa).
10. When prompted for language support, click "Select all" then click "Next".
11. When prompted for locale settings, you can keep the default locale, "English (United States) [en_US]". No need to check "Configure as Unicode server", you can leave it unchecked as is the default. Click "Next".
12. Select "Use the recommended Java Runtime Environment" (should be default) and then click "Next".
13. When prompted for a path to your browser, click "Browse" and locate it within the filesystem. Within the browse dialog, click on the icon of the browser executable, then click "Open". Third-party browsers such as Firefox and Chrome will be found in C:\Program Files (x86). For example, using Chrome, the path would be:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe
It turns out that Internet Explorer has been moved to C:\Program Files (x86) as well. The path to IE is:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe
Internet Explorer is always there, so in a pinch, you can use that if nothing else (it won't let you proceed without specifying a path to some browser).
Whether you filled in the path to a browser by typing it in manually, or by clicking "Browse" and navigating through the filesystem, you can click "Next" as soon as a valid path has been specified.
14. Set deployment directory for SAS/GRAPH Java Applets to:
C:\Windows\Temp
You can click "Browse" and navigate through the filesystem to locate the directory, or you can just type it in. Feel free to specify an alternate directory. It's likely the functionality will never be used, anyway (but the installer still requires some value to be specified). Click "Next".
15. Check "Start Service Now and Automatically when Windows Starts" then click "Next".
16. Leave port number set to default 9621 and click "Next".
17. Leave "SAS environments URL" blank when prompted, then click "Next".
18. When prompted for "Document conversion host and port", the host name will just default to the current IP address of your desktop (and you can't change it). That's OK. Leave the port number at 7111 and click "Next".
19. Wait at "Checking system" while the installer loads packages.
20. Wait at same dialog while the installer calculates disk space utilization for all the packages that will be installed. Hopefully the SAS installer doesn't enumerate any files blocking installation (we've never found any) and you can just click "Next" to proceed.
21. Click "Start" to begin the installation. Let it run and swap disks as prompted by the installer (it will likely take a few hours to complete).
If at any time you are prompted to reboot, do so then begin again at Step (1). Once the installer is off and running, it will pick up where it left off last time it was run, however, it WILL NOT automatically start Setup.exe after a reboot.
22. If you get a "Pending reboot and automatic log on" dialog, you can feel free to check "Automatically log back on after reboot". Leave the domain blank; specify the user as csg-admin along with the requisite password, then click OK. Note that in case of a reboot, this will make sure you get logged back in automatically, but it STILL won't automatically re-start Setup.exe!
